World's longest bridge opens

World's Longest Bridge Opens

China has just opened the world's highest and longest tunnel-to-tunnel suspension bridge in the mountainous region of Hunan province. The Aizhai Extra Large Suspension Bridge, 355 metres above the Dehang Canyon, is part of the 64-kilometre-long Jishou-Chadong Expressway and links tunnels that are 1,176 metres apart. It is thought that the new bridge will cut down travel from between the two cities from several days to just eight hours. And pedestrians who aren't scared of heights, or long walks, can stroll along an attached walkway under the bridge. There's even a view-point for tourists.Work started on the engineering feat in October 2007 and the bulk of the work finished at the end of last year. The bridge was officially open on Tuesday 3rd April 2012.
