Iraq unrest

The fighting continued in Iraq today near a main oil refinery, with government forces trying to stop a week-long attack from members of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and others. The Iraqi foreign minister has asked the United States for air strikes against the Sunni militants' positions but President Obama, in a meeting with leaders of Congress today, said he wanted for now to focus on training Iraq's security forces and providing equipment. Thousand of displaced civilians have been looking for shelter since the the attacks began. --Lloyd Young

Assault in Syria

Horrific images were taken this week of an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria. Rows of bodies, including many children, fill rooms and streets in the eastern suburbs of Damascus, and Syrian activists are reporting hundreds of people killed. The Syrian government denies the use of chemical weapons, and an investigation continues. The civil war persists as forces continued fighting and droves fled the country. (WARNING: Images are graphic)

Bunda Cliffs in Australia Is this the End of the World ?

Located on the Great Australian Bight in Southern Australia, is the vast, featureless Nullarbor Plain - the world’s largest single piece of limestone, covering an area of 270,000 square km and extending some 1,000 km from the east to the west. The area is so flat that the Trans Australian Railway runs across its surface for about 483 kilometers in a completely straight line. On the surface of the plain there are areas of slight depressions where sparse rainfall has slowly dissolved away some of the limestone. There are also places where underground caves or sinkholes have collapsed to form dents in the surface. But mostly, the plain is horizontally flat and devoid of trees, as its Latin name suggests. The Nullarbor Plain ends abruptly at the spectacular Bunda Cliffs, comprising a 200-kilometer-long precipice curving around the Great Australian Bight.

New Crude Oil Spas in Naftalan at Azerbaijan

In the Azerbaijan city of Naftalan, 320 kilometers north-west of the capital Baku, crude oil is found in such abundance that people literally bath in it. During the Soviet era, Naftalan’s famous crude oil baths used to draw tourists from all over the Soviet Union. It is believed that Naftalan crude oil has medicinal properties and is good for treating skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, easing joint pains and generally calming the nerves. At their peak in the 1980s, Naftalan spas had 75,000 visitors a year. This reduced to a trickle when war broke out between Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenians in nearby Nagorno-Karabakh in 1988, and many resorts were converted into camps for housing refugees. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, petroleum baths closed down entirely. Now nearly two decades later, crude oil spas have started opening up again.

Kitintale Skate Park in Uganda

The Uganda Skateboard Union consists of a group of young people in the Kampala district of Uganda. After watching a skateboarding video from the United States, Jackson Mubiru, the director of the USU, along with a few others decided to build their own skateboard park. The Kintalke Skate Park is the first skate park in East Africa, and was also built entirely without the assistance of NGO’s or government funding. Today, there are over 50 members of the USU who skate daily at Kitintale, and the skateboard company Birdhouse has since sponsored the skateparks, along with a number of private donors who support the cause. Kitintale acts as not only a place for recreation, but encourages community among these young people, both keeping them from trouble and encouraging them to pursue a dream that seems almost unheard of from a small village in Uganda.

Chinese Grandma Spends All Her Life Savings Taking Care of Stray Dogs and Cats

Grandma Bai, a 64-year-old animal lover from Chongqing, China, has spent the last 15 years taking care of stray dogs and cats, and has exhausted all her life savings in the process.
Case in point, Grandma Bai, a native of Leshan, China, who has spent all her savings and the last 15 years of her life taking care of over 100 stray dogs and 30 cats. Her love for these abandoned creatures and the sacrifices she has had to make have melted the hearts of millions, since the story broke out in China.
Grandma Bai used to live in the urban area of Chongqing, but as the number of animals she took in off the streets of China’s largest city grew, she realized she had to relocate to a nearby village, where the animals wouldn’t bother people so much. So, against the wishes of her family, she took all her adopted pets and moved to the country. Here, she built a home for them and continued gathering new strays from the surrounding area. Now the number of animals in her care approaches 150 (over 100 dogs and about 30 cats), and despite financial difficulties she’s still bringing in new members. According to the kind woman, the animals’ food alone costs 200 yuan ($32), and she has spent both her life savings and the money the Government paid her for demolishing her old home.

Terrafugia TF-X The vertical take-off flying car

The first flying car – the Terrafugia Transition is on its way soon, while we wait for the first fling car itself, Terrafugia is already planning on developing another vertical takeoff car that’ll do 200 mph alongside other amazing features. Slated to go on sale after the Transition hits market sometime in 2015-16, the new model dubbed Terrafugia TF-X will be a plug-in hybrid flying car that will allegedly fly at a top speed of 200 mph.
The idea behind creation of the TF-X is clearly to enhance safety, convenience and sustainability of personal transportation in the future. The electric motor on the TF-X will help the flyer take off, while a built-in gas engine will propel it on flight. According to Terrafugia, the four seater TF-X flying car will have autopilot functions for just about everything in there, so you won’t need a pilot’s license to fly it, just tell it where to go and it will fly you!

Sugar and salt - How It Process?

Although modern techniques often bring sugar and salt to our tables, these two simple treats for the palate are still harvested and processed in traditional, if not ancient methods the world over. Over 160 million tons of sugar is produced annually in well over 100 countries, most of it processed from cane in tropical countries. The world uses 240 million tons of salt every year in everything from food to industrial applications. Gathered here are images of the toils that result in two of our favorite flavors. -- Lane Turner

Damage by Tornadoes In America

Tornadoes can form anytime of year, but occur most frequently in April, May, and June, due to favorable weather conditions. Earlier this week a massive 200-mile-per-hour EF5 tornado hit Moore, Okla., killing some two dozen people, damaging thousands of structures, and causing an estimated $2 billion in damage. This year, twisters have already touched down in Kansas, Texas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Missouri, and Alabama.

Wildfires in California

California Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. yesterday declared this week as "Wildfire Awareness Week" in recognition of last week's devastating fires northwest of Los Angeles. His proclamation noted, "In an average year, wildfires burn 900,000 acres of California's timber and grasslands." Rains that moved into the area on Monday helped extinguish the fires that started last Thursday along US Route 101 near Camarillo Springs and Thousand Oaks, endangering some 4,000 homes. -- Lloyd Young

The Landscape Laboratory in Portugal

Completed last year, the Landscape Laboratory in Portugal is a modern restoration of an old stone factory. The renovation was designed by Porto-based Cannata & Fernandes Architects, who sought to preserve the existing structures as much as possible. Many features - including the original stone walls - have been left untouched, while the interior was adapted to new times and uses. Located southwest of the historic city center of Guimarães, Portugal, the Landscape Laboratory stands in a rural area near the National Ecological Reserve (REN). The architects preserved the original factory typology, which consists of a series of modules surrounded by green spaces, water channels and trails. The stone façade was recovered, cleaned and fixed with bricks, while new concrete volumes were added to adapt the building for modern use. Its interiors are contemporary, bright, open and filled with natural light. Some areas (like a small kitchen) mimic the building’s exterior factory typology. Set next to the Ribeira de Selho canal, the Landscape Laboratory is a beautiful renovation that blends history and modernity under one roof

Farrah Abraham
The young mom who starred on "16 and Pregnant" and then "Teen Moms" has apparently been idolizing the reality stars who have come before her a bit too much.
