New Sustainable Modular Buildings Open At New York's Beaches
After Sandy, the lifeguard stations on New York’s beaches were destroyed. But these new versions are built to withstand a storm--and might be a model for how to think about building better for the future. Designed and built at a breakneck pace, prefab comfort stations by Garrison Architects. The restrooms, lifeguard stations and offices were designed to replace structures washed away by Hurricane Sandy in October.

Pebble Beach And Cliff of Etretat in France
Étretat is a commune in the Seine-Maritime department in the Haute-Normandie region in northern France. It is a tourist and farming town situated about 32 km (20 mi) northeast of Le Havre.Three massive natural stone arches at both ends of Etretat Plage inspired the impressionist painters Boudin, Monet and Manet. This stretch of Alabaster Coast, northeast of Le Havre, has been classified as a site of “national importance”. The pebbled beach, sparked with quartz geodes, is wrapped in dramatic cliffs eroded into giant formations and offshore needles. Two of the arches, the Porte d’Aval and the Porte Amont, can be seen from the town; a third, the Manneport, only reveals itself after a walk at low tide when 17th century oyster beds also emerge from the sea.

Strange Beach in the Middle of a Meadow
Strange Beach in the Middle of a Meadow
Tucked away into a small inland hollow, right in the middle of a meadow, Playa de Gulpiyuri is one of the most amazing beaches in the world. We’ve certainly featured some unique places here, on Oddity Central, and even a few incredible beaches, like the hot water beach of New Zealand or California’s glass beach, but none like the beach of Gulpiyuri. Located near the charming town of Llanes, on the northern coast of Spain, Gulpiyuri Beach is unlike anything I have ever seen, or even imagined existed outside of fantasy books or fictional planets. Imagine walking over 100 meters from the sea shoreline and stumbling over a small charming beach right in the middle of a green meadow. And while you may find other beaches completely hidden from the open sea, around the world, this one is actually fully tidal and even has waves bathing the small strip of golden sand.
So how is it that waves form this far away from the ocean? It appears the salt waters of the Cantabrian Sea bored through the earth, creating a series of underground tunnels that constantly feed water to Gulpiyuri Beach. Water from the nearby Bay of Biscay comes in through the underground tunnel network and washes up on Gulpiyuri in gentle waves, adding to the charm of this magical cove. The shallow crystal clear water of this place acts as a swimming invitation that cannot be refused, but you may find it a little cold, because the water tends to remain underground for a while, before washing into Gulpiyuri Beach.
Because it’s only 40 meters in length, and outside viewing range from the shoreline, Playa de Gulpiyuri can be pretty hard to find, unless you have an updated GPS map or ask for directions from the locals. Even so, it’s best to avoid visiting it on weekends, when the beach is simply inundated by tourists from all around the world.

Red Beach is located in Panjin China
Red Beach is located in Panjin China
Red Beach is located in Panjin, Liaoning Province, in northeastern China. It is the largest and best protected wetland in the world with rare and precious red reed marshes. The ebb and flow of the sea forms the beach, while the infiltration of salts and alkali contributes to its red appearance. The 100 square kilometers of reed marshes turn color during September, becoming spectacular vistas. The well-preserved wetlands are also home to large numbers of wild birds, including red-crowned cranes and Saunders' gulls. The beach is a popular tourist site for those who live inside and outside Liaoning Province. 10 more images after the break...
